hot in the a.m.

past couple of weekends, the three of us have been going to little korea for breakfast. of course, koreans don’t really have what’s considered solely breakfast food; what you have in the morning could just as well be your lunch.

ione can now sit through a meal in a restaurant, as long as we keep her busy with food, like gyeran jjim (steamed egg), a favorite, and other distractions appealing to a two year old. she’s also not a picky eater and pretty game with trying new stuff. i was more surprised by daphne’s interest in a spicy breakfast. i always knew she was adventurous, but this seems to go against every last nucleotide of her kansas city genome.

but there she was, chowing down kimchi golbdol bibimbap like it’s crack. we agreed before hand i would get the dook bae ki bulgoki (beef stew in stone pot), another one of our favorites, and switch when we’re about half way through. i looked again and she's already deep into my half with no sign of slowing down.

but i understand. we both love the heat: the way it makes us sweat without getting hot, and as the sweat evaporates, how chills run down our spine.

it also reminds me of sundays some time ago, when i stood in front of 6 hubert street, still drenched from dancing nonstop for hours to timmy regisford's afterhours groove, took a deep breathe of the new day and savored a brief but perfect moment of bliss.
