mexican standoff
the next flight was at 2am and by the time i stumbled out of customs in mexico city, carlos was already waiting for me at freedom café next to the arrival exit. he looked about as shitty as i felt, having gotten up 4 in the morning and drove an hour to the airport to pick me up. on the way to my hotel, there was traffic. at half past 5 in the morning, our car slowed to a crawl. i looked to carlos who said without turning his head, “in mexico city, distance doesn’t mean anything; it all depends on the traffic.” we ended up spending close to 5 hrs in the car that day, shuttling between three meetings. next day, as we continued to sit in traffic between meetings, i asked carlos when it got to be so bad. he first recognized it, he claimed, when coming home from an out of town trip one night in the mid-70s, he literally ran into a “wall of cars.” “the problem,” he continued, pointing to several cars in front of us straddling lanes, “is that nobody follow rules.” “...including me,” he said as he cut off a minibus.
