the last pose
a week later, i realized it was a really bad idea. it was pretty clear that willi was not cut out for the 9-5, even something as benign as an indie label gig. the disorganization, the tardiness, and the attitude; he couldn’t be what i needed him to be. i was pissed at him. i thought he was just not trying. “you guys front that businessman shit pretty well at the balls,” i remember bitching. it was much later that i realized the obvious: who’s ever heard of a punctual diva? i have seen willi dance to all of these songs at some point: chilling with don ray’s loft classic at his mama’s; working aphrohead’s proto-tribal thump at louie vega’s sound factory bar parties; and deep grooving to elements of life at a dance performance he choreographed. bye willi, you’ll be missed.
