i have a problem with precocious kids. not the regular uber-smart kind, just the show-offs, those who parade their smarts like mascara on kiddie beauty contestants. it's not endearing; it’s fucking annoying.

of course i blame the parents. in their twisted, neurotic hands, the kids become overcompensation for parental shortcomings. it’s not good enough just to keep up with the joneses, you gotta kick their ass to have any self-esteem these days.

but what did you expect from a society weaned on walt disney? such all-american cultural milestones as cinderella, bambi, and jungle book articulate a bleak family life, with parental units mean, dead or awol, and the only way out is to go alpha by any means necessary.

that’s why i love totoro. hayao miyazaki’s 1988 opus is everything disney is not. instead of disengaged adults, satsuki and mei’s parents care deeply for them and treat them with sensitivity and respect. instead of a dog-eat-dog world, his is one where the being one with nature is a beautiful, magical, and ultimately empowering experience. forget prince charming to the rescue; closest thing here is a prepubescent boy with a vague crush. idealistic and realistic turned out to be a great combination of virtues for both an anime and a kid.

that’s why i hate the new totoro 2-disks set from disney. unlike the original 2002 troma edition dub, where the girls sounded the way they acted, you get dakota fanning and her sister/sidekick elle sounding bored, like they are better than the material. it's the kind of precocious flaunting that makes you wanna upside they mama’s head.

i bought the disney version in cali a couple of weeks ago trying to keep ione happy; she loves her "dododo" and we left it home in new york. now we watch it in japanese.
