3 arabian nights - etoh
it’s only a 15 minutes drive from the hotel, but it took tony and i an extra half hour to get through security. like the hotel, the entrance to the quarter is heavily fortified by staggered concrete barricades manned by imposing guards with mounted machine guns. before we enter the home where the party is held, there is yet another layer of security involving a cage and men with submachine guns. but then it was a different world: the yard was expansive and decorated with manicured lawns, shrubs, and fruit trees. it was an alcoholic oasis with uniformed waiters circulating with drinks among suites, dresses, bishts and abayas. the setting and the atmosphere were like something you would see in a david lean flick, gorgeous but from a different era. our host was friendly and gracious; although his wife, balancing her drink, cigarette and herself, was almost a cliché. the crowd was well-heeled: bankers, businessmen, and one perky man who introduced himself as a “conservative member of the house.” i spent a good part of the evening trying to decide if his perfectly white teeth are real. “i’m a bit shy at these things,” tony suddenly confessed. no shit. our discomfort reminded me of peter sellers in "the party". but i ditched him anyway just before dinner started. it was raining when i left for the airport.
